Addressing dementia with art
Around 55 million people worldwide suffer from dementia, and their number is increasing. Artist Ruth Mateus-Berr has been working intensively on this topic for years. Her aim is to develop awareness of the social challenges involved in dealing with dementia patients. In her arts-based research project DEMEDARTS, Mateus-Berr is implementing new approaches and developing innovative designs with the aim of combining function with enjoyment. The projects involve young people as well as dementia sufferers and their families. Her playful solutions not only create empathy and awareness, they also offer practical help to support those affected by dementia.
