A quantum leap in time measurement
Physicist Thorsten Schumm has succeeded in exciting an atomic nucleus using laser light. The breakthrough at TU Wien’s Atominstitut (ATI) has far-reaching consequences for basic research. Atomic nucleus clocks could provide the most precise timekeeping in the world – much more precise than previous atomic clocks. This facilitates the development of better, safer technologies like guidance systems for the visually impaired or self-driving cars.
