Does stress make us more helpful?
With the advent of the Corona pandemic, social distancing has become the order of the day. At the same time, the lockdown is very stressful for many people. A team of researchers from Vienna and Zurich is investigating how stress relates to social behaviour and how the latter develops. This is the first project to […] Continue reading “Does stress make us more helpful?”
Taking a close look at reading and spelling
In a joint project researchers from the Universities of Graz and Munich have investigated dyslexia as the most common learning disorder at primary school age. They have been able to identify causes of reading difficulties at both cognitive and behavioural level which can occur independently of spelling deficiencies. Continue reading “Taking a close look at reading and spelling”
Neurosciences: a stress test for men and women
Whilst it is true that women and men respond differently to stress, current neuroscientific research only partially confirms traditional gender stereotypes. Other factors heavily contribute to the stress response such as self-esteem, hormones and stress regulation, as has been demonstrated by a project funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF. Continue reading “Neurosciences: a stress test for men and women”
Messenger substance can reduce anxiety
The targeted control of biochemical processes and neuronal signalling pathways using the messenger substance neuropeptide Y could help in the future treatment of anxiety disorders. This is demonstrated in research findings by the Austrian Science Fund FWF, which were published in “Neuropsychopharmacology”. Continue reading “Messenger substance can reduce anxiety”
Addiction research uncovers potential of social interaction
Animals prefer contact with other animals rather than drug consumption. – This has been shown by neuroscience studies providing first-time evidence of the positive impact of social interaction and opening up new therapeutic avenues. Continue reading “Addiction research uncovers potential of social interaction”
Migraine: Light therapy may bring new hope
Migraines often involve heightened sensitivity to light. In a project funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF, a team of researchers from the Medical University Vienna is investigating new therapies to treat light sensitivity, which greatly disturbs those affected. Continue reading “Migraine: Light therapy may bring new hope”
