Social distancing under the Habsburg Empire

The Graz-based historian Christian Promitzer explored how scourges such as plague and cholera were combatted under the Habsburg Empire in the 19th century, finding some parallels with today. Research teams in Innsbruck and Antwerp are exploring a still rather neglected subject – the phenomenon of pain from the perspective of 19th century Catholicism. At that time, religious traditions were supposedly at odds with medical developments in pain therapy – but the research results provide a different picture.
