“Greetings” from Lower Styria
With the advent of the postcard, written correspondence experienced a boost everywhere, including Lower Styria. A project funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF now illustrates through postcards the coexistence and clashes between the German and Slovenian languages in the final decades of the Habsburg Monarchy. Courageous staff for building up a bureaucracy
In their newly conquered province, the Banat of Temeswar, the Habsburgs took first steps towards creating a “modern bureaucracy” at the beginning of the 18th century. Migration and border security in the Habsburg Empire
Systematic controls were carried out at the Habsburg Empire’s border with the Ottoman Empire as far back as the 18th century. Combined with the mobility control of Ottoman migrants, they were key features of Habsburg population policy.
