The nobility as an economic force in the Habsburg Empire

Pomp and pageantry: when we think of the nobility in the Habsburg Monarchy, we usually think of them as spending lavishly. But where did the money for all the pomp and splendour actually come from? The historian Veronika Hyden-Hanscho is investigating the sources of income and the entrepreneurial activities of the nobility from the 17th […] Continue reading “The nobility as an economic force in the Habsburg Empire”

Civil servants: serving and supporting the state

No matter how many things are changing: civil servants have remained part of the state in every form of government over the past 200 years. The issue of food shortages […] Continue reading “Welfare state born out of crisis”

Courageous staff for building up a bureaucracy

In their newly conquered province, the Banat of Temeswar, the Habsburgs took first steps towards creating a “modern bureaucracy” at the beginning of the 18th century. Research funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF has now shown how their staff management developed in concrete terms. Continue reading “Courageous staff for building up a bureaucracy”

Migration and border security in the Habsburg Empire

Systematic controls were carried out at the Habsburg Empire’s border with the Ottoman Empire as far back as the 18th century. Combined with the mobility control of Ottoman migrants, they were key features of Habsburg population policy. The development of this policy is currently being studied with the support of the Austrian Science Fund FWF. Continue reading “Migration and border security in the Habsburg Empire”
