Silent witnesses of a world war

Between 1914 and 1918, around 1,500 films were produced in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy – a far greater number than previously assumed. Many of them were produced to entertain and not for war propaganda purposes. A comprehensive filmography now provides an unparalleled empirical basis and unravels some of the myths.
