Ground beetles for a sustainable food supply

Corinna Wallinger and her research group have studied the food choices of ground beetles in local grain fields. They found that these insects can play an important role in weed regulation, as they consume significantly more weed than previously assumed. This insight may contribute to making agriculture more sustainable. Continue reading “Ground beetles for a sustainable food supply”

Forests and the climate 100 years from now

The Institute for Systems Analysis IIASA is participating in an international research group that explores how different forms of forest management interact with climate change on a global scale. A particular focus is being placed on biodiversity issues, and beetles have an important role to play in this context. Continue reading “Forests and the climate 100 years from now”

Land tenancy and soil conservation – a contradiction in terms?

A research group in Vienna investigated the impact of how farm tenancies affect the management of agricultural land. Farms with a large share of leased land tend to invest less in soil conservation. Nonetheless, environmental awareness is relatively pronounced among Austrian farmers. Continue reading “Land tenancy and soil conservation – a contradiction in terms?”

Plant species interactions in Perth

By Christiana Staudinger

Some of the world’s most impoverished habitats are found in the Southwest of Australia. There, biologist and Schrödinger Fellow Christiana Staudinger has found the ideal setting to investigate how plants and soils adapt to such harsh conditions. Surprisingly, this region’s flora is also full of life and very diverse, as the young scholar reports from […] Continue reading “Plant species interactions in Perth”

More life between vine rows

As studies have shown, higher biodiversity enhances the benefits derived from the vineyard ecosystem. Within the context of a project funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF, researchers investigated the interaction of soil cultivation and landscape structure in European wine regions. Continue reading “More life between vine rows”

Cherry-picking among flies

With the support of the FWF, Hannes Schuler investigates fruit tree pests and their parasitic ‘lodgers’. He wants to find out which Wolbachia bacteria occur in which cherry fruit fly species, how they are transferred and what this means for the successful reproduction of the flies. Continue reading “Cherry-picking among flies”

Manure boosts beneficial predators in agriculture

Fertilisers and pest control are central elements of agriculture and have a direct impact on the composition of species found in crop fields. Supported by the Austrian Science Fund FWF, a research group and helping hands from the University of Innsbruck are engaged in field research, using ecological and molecular methods to find out which […] Continue reading “Manure boosts beneficial predators in agriculture”
