On the road

Science is international – and so are scientists. With its Erwin Schrödinger Programmes, the FWF permits researchers to gather important experience abroad. In the autobiographical series Unterwegs (On the road), scientists who benefited from a grant under these programmes describe their experience.

Doing maths on a blackboard in Florence

By Fabian Mußnig

The mathematician and Schrödinger Fellow Fabian Mußnig left for Florence in the middle of the pandemic. Amid the restricted activities at the university there, Mußnig was lucky enough to get a desk in the office of a professor he knew. Fruitful discussions and new scientific insights ensued from this unexpected and very personal exchange. Continue reading “Doing maths on a blackboard in Florence”

Learning from crises – doing research in a year like no other

By Javier López Prol

Research thrives on international exchanges and young researchers, in particular, benefit from stays abroad. Javier López Prol completed his Schrödinger Fellowship in Berlin, until the coronavirus came onto the scene. For scilog, this economist reports on how he was able to make a contribution to society in the pandemic as a researcher and how this […] Continue reading “Learning from crises – doing research in a year like no other”

It’s live or let die for proteins – Stockholm in the pandemic

By Verena Kohler

Perfectly balanced processes in cells keep our organism healthy. With increasing age, this balance can be disturbed and there is a decline of communication within the cell. The biochemist and Schrödinger Fellow Verena Kohler seeks to understand what exactly happens during cell ageing. She has found the perfect research environment for this endeavour at Stockholm […] Continue reading “It’s live or let die for proteins – Stockholm in the pandemic”

Social interaction at MIT

By Livia Tomova

The corona pandemic confronts society with the impact of social isolation. Schrödinger Fellow Livia Tomova explored this topic even before the crisis began. At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she studied how the brain reacts to loneliness and the craving for social contact. As Tomova reports in this guest contribution to scilog, the results of […] Continue reading “Social interaction at MIT”

Music brings people together – researchers included

By Jan Stupacher

Jan Stupacher is a psychologist and interested in music. He is exploring two central questions:  how does the brain process music, and how does music affect our social behaviour? A Schrödinger Fellowship by the FWF has provided Stupacher with the opportunity to pursue his research focus at Aarhus University in Denmark, where he enjoys working […] Continue reading “Music brings people together – researchers included”
